The realization that we’d been so easily tricked and that Jimmy’s sister was part of Raven’s army kept me awake, frustrated and angry. It had been so easy for her to slip into the camp, with no one noticing. It made me wonder what else we had missed.
A ragtag group, Ethan had called us. We were certainly no threat.
So why had he sent Jimmy’s sister as a spy?
I slammed my fists onto the hard ground. There was no doubt Ethan had known about the illnesses and the serum all along. What else did he know? With a sigh, I rolled onto my side. The tent felt suddenly too small, the air stifling. Even inside the walls of canvas, I felt watched. Ethan had an interest in us for some reason…why? The serum? But he knew it didn’t work.
The soft flutter of the tent flap was the only indication that someone had entered. Before I could sit upright and grab the dagger strapped to my thigh. Thane’s warm body was pressed to my back. I recognized his scent immediately. Resisting the urge to sigh and sink back into him, I rolled over.
Those eyes glowed eerily in the night. I never thought I’d find those eyes appealing, but I could imagine nothing else on him. Having Thane tucked comfortably against my side warmed me in a way I didn’t understand, yet pleased me all the same. He was here. For a moment, anyway, everything was alright. I relaxed, the anxiety I felt dissipating a little.
“I was hoping to see you,” I murmured.
Giving into temptation, I closed my eyes and snuggled closer to his warmth, savoring the moment. I knew he had arrived for a reason. And whatever that reason, it couldn’t be good. But for a moment, just a moment, I didn’t want to think, didn’t want to dissect and discuss any life or death situation. For a moment I just wanted to be.
In the distance someone coughed. Two shadows moved by my tent, their conversation low and murmured. How silly they were to think they could keep Thane locked away from me. If Thane wanted to leave he could…which made me wonder why he was still here.
He lowered his mouth to my ear. “Stay quiet.”
I nodded. But when I nodded my lips brushed his and suddenly I realized how very close we were. My heart stopped for one split second, my breath held. Slowly, I tilted my head back and attempted to gauge his thoughts. I’d missed being this close to him. Missed our time lone together. Had he? Before I thought better of it, I leaned closer and brushed my mouth against his. And just like that it was done. I pulled back and studied his reaction. There was none. He lay there, not saying a word, merely staring at me with that shadowed gaze.
An embarrassed flush seeped up my neck. “I’m sorry. I just—”
Thane groaned, his fingers suddenly biting into my hips. With a gasp, I found myself hauled up against him.
